Byron Donalds released a video endorsement for Chip Roy on May 26, the day voters decide the Republican nominee for Texas attorney general. Roy faces Mayes Middleton in the runoff. Donalds, who is running for governor of Florida, added his name to an endorsement list that already includes Sen. Ted Cruz.
Video Arrives as Polls Open
The timing gives Roy a final push from a national conservative figure. Donalds recorded the message specifically for the Texas contest and distributed it on runoff day. Voters in the Republican primary now see the endorsement alongside earlier support from Cruz, who backed Roy in August 2025.
Chip Roy reached the runoff after placing second in the March 3 primary with 31.7 percent of the vote. The Ballotpedia record shows he advanced against Middleton to the May 26 contest. A last-minute video from an out-of-state candidate adds visibility without requiring additional travel or events.
Existing Financial and Senate Backing
Roy already held a significant cash advantage before the video dropped. A GOP megadonor contributed $2.75 million to his runoff effort in May 2026, according to Texas Tribune reporting. That sum supplements earlier fundraising and gives Roy resources for final advertising and get-out-the-vote operations.
Cruz's August 2025 endorsement provided an initial signal of Senate-level support. The combination of the megadonor check and the Cruz nod established Roy as the candidate with the strongest institutional and financial backing heading into the final week. Middleton has not matched those totals in public filings.
